Morning Sunshine Models was originally inspired by Jiehui Z. Elder in 2002. It rapidly became one of the largest distributors of 1/1250 models in the world. Mr. Bill Warner purchased the company in 2010, and ran it very successfully until he decided to sell his holdings to Chris Daley of 1250.com fame in 2014. Having large numbers of miniature ship models on hand, George Elder decided to sell off his collection, and thus arose Miniature Ship Models. He carries a few active lines, with Hai being the only large producer. To be sure, the new MSM is largely a Hai dealership, though Elder embraces all ships of the preDreadnought era. He says the ships are much like him, short, fat, slow, and of limited endurance. Elder has also decided to use his website to offer the works of David Orzell and Hugh Thomas, who are well known for their work in his favorite era. In addition, retailers such as Doug Knowlton have been welcomed aboard to sell their holdings of used models, with an open mat being extended to others who might want to trade or sell various models. In this sense, the new MSM is a conglomerate, and one that we hope needs the needs and desires of the community we serve.
Dr. George H. Elder has a passion for ships that he himself does not fully understand. His family is related to Admiral Perry of 1840 fame, a keen practitioner of gunboat diplomacy and the heavy and frequent use of strong libations. Indeed, Elder seems to have inherited considerable bombast in addition to a passion for all things naval. He earned a Ph.D. from Penn State in Speech Communication and a Masters Degree in nonfiction Writing from UNH. He also has a very eclectic work, personal, and academic history, with his research interests running from paleontology to the neurosciences. He has been a college teacher, custodian, upper-level scholar, drug addict, weight lifting coach, bouncer, and much more. He authored numerous articles in the popular press and even a scientific text book that examines the neuropsychological basis of human communication. Recently, he completed a text that reviews dream science and history, using his own dreams as examples. He has also addressed subjects such Platonic philosophy, military history, cognitive psychology, free speech, weight training, drug use, nutrient effects, street life, and a wide range of other issues. Yet his real passion is ship models, a hobby he has had since early childhood.
